Don’t we all wish we could have a comfortable place to study? Well, the students at Vleuterweide Campus in Utrecht, The Netherlands, need not wish no more. Their information plaza has undergone a considerable renovation, and as a result, it has now become a very cool, high-tech culture space which provides the students with a conducive atmosphere for studying or doing research.
The space is sparsely furnished, with high ceiling that makes it feel airy and spacious. The lighting is fine as well, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that take up two sides of the space, and the clear glass that admits sunlight from between the ceiling’s great wooden beams. And when the sun is out, we have quite a lot of pendant lamps dangling from above.
The design looks very modern and sophisticated. Stone and wood are used predominantly—grey brick for the walls, grey stone tiles for the flooring, and wood of a light shade for the benches. But there are also touches of color, as the benches are all lined with fabric with orange-and-red stripes on it. This provides a nice, refreshing accent, while still maintaining the space’s clean and serious look.
The benches look very modern, almost futuristic, even. The tables, chairs, and the platform on which they stand are integrated together in one seamless design. They are very angular—that is the one that gives the entire space its cutting edge look, I guess—and every bench is fitted in with all the necessary technologies, i.e. computer sets complete with headphones, with the monitors planted into the partition of each bench. All this makes the place look very sleek, compact, and functional.
The magazines and other publications are also stored in a way that is very efficient and compact, enabling the students to find out what they are looking for more easily. These racks stand on its own area, separated from the area where the benches stand. This allows the students to search their materials with more concentration, while the ones studying in the benches will not be disturbed either. It is clear that the furniture is arranged in such a way that will guarantee a conducive atmosphere for studying. What’s even better is that this place looks so stylish and sophisticated. Where else can you study well while still feeling cool?
