The Long Barn Studio, as its name suggests, is a long rectangular building which was formerly a barn. It was then renovated to be the amazing office building of Nicholas Tye Architects, which is also the company that built it. The design of this office was made to be in harmony with its natural surroundings, which is a hillside in Bedfordshire. As a result, unlike modern office buildings which usually look grandiose or futuristic, the Long Barn Studio looks simple, humble, and a little rustic—though it still has the sleek look of modern offices.
The building has only one story, but that is not an issue—while it lacks in height, it certainly does not lack in length. There is enough room for everything in this 2,200 square feet office. To make it look in harmony with its natural surroundings, the house uses a lot of natural materials, such as wood and stone. All the walls, both the interior and exterior, are covered with grey wooden planks (which look like stone). The flooring inside the office consists of cream-colored slabs of stone. One side of the office is entirely taken up by frameless glass panels that stretch from the office’s floor all the way to its ceiling. This glass wall is a perfect way to illuminate the office as well as providing the employees with a beautiful and inspiring view of the nature outside. The breathtaking surroundings can also be enjoyed outside, at one end of the office, where a long wooden table with eight chairs around it stands beside a little garden where several crops grow. This spot looks especially rustic.
While the exterior of the office does not look very flashy, the interior hosts all the technology that is necessary for the employees to complete their work. White Apple iMacs line up on the long white desk that is the center of the office life, but somehow they do not ruin the aesthetics of the humble design. It also uses environment-friendly technologies, such as a wind turbine, an air heat recovery circulation system, and rainwater harvesting. The space is used very efficiently. For example, the bookshelves are tucked nicely between two sets of pillars at both side of the office. There is even a comfortable chair in these mini-libraries. Besides those, this building also managed to include several meeting rooms and a printing area. Fantastic, isn’t it? This office does not only look good, but is also respectful of its environment, sleek, and functional.
